Article: The October Ritual

The October Ritual
October changes things.
The mornings are cooler. The light shifts. Windows stay open a little longer, sweaters find their way back into rotation, and the routines that felt right all summer begin to change.
In the studio, October feels much the same.
This is the point in the year when I naturally begin reaching for warmer scents, richer textures and the little things that make home feel especially good.
A different kind of clean
Cooler weather has a way of changing what skin asks for.
This year, that shift feels especially fitting with the arrival of our new Oil-to-Milk Body Wash. It begins as an oil and transforms with water into a light cleansing milk which is a completely different experience from traditional soap and one I developed for the days when skin wants cleansing without feeling stripped.
And then there is bar soap.
Always.
There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about a good bar of soap, warm water and a few quiet minutes. After all these years of making it, I still love the ritual of it.
The return of Gather
October also means Gather.
Warm, inviting and familiar, Gather is one of those scents that simply feels like home. Every year, its return to the studio seems to mark the real beginning of autumn.
Our 20-ounce Gather Liquid Soap is back for the season in the generous size so many of you know and wait for each year. It moves easily from shower to sink and is made to last through the season.
When Gather comes back, autumn has officially arrived around here.
Get creative
An autumn shower bundle
This might be one of the simplest ways to bring a little bit of the outside in.
You'll need:
-
A few stems of fresh eucalyptus
-
2–3 sprigs of rosemary
-
A few stems of lavender, if you have them
-
Cotton or natural twine
-
Scissors
Gather the stems together and trim the bottoms so they're roughly even.
Before tying, gently roll or press the eucalyptus and rosemary between your hands. You aren't trying to crush them, just move them enough to disturb the leaves and release some of their natural aroma.
Tie the stems securely with twine, leaving enough at the end to create a loop.
Hang the bundle from your showerhead or somewhere nearby where it will be warmed by the steam without sitting directly under the water.
Then take a shower.
The warmth and humidity help release the natural scent of the plants, and something as ordinary as taking a shower suddenly feels a little more intentional.
Replace your bundle as the herbs dry and lose their scent. And if eucalyptus isn't your thing, don't overthink it. Rosemary alone is beautiful.
Small things, used well
I don't think a ritual needs to be elaborate to matter.
Sometimes it is choosing the soap you love instead of whatever happens to be there. Bringing a handful of herbs inside. Lighting a candle when the afternoon light starts disappearing earlier. Taking an extra minute in the shower.
Small things, used well.
That's always been at the heart of Naked Goat.
As we move into one of the busiest seasons of the year, I'm trying to remind myself to notice the changing light, enjoy the cooler mornings and make room for the ordinary things that make home feel like home.
Welcome to October.
XO,
Heather
